Andreas Mikkelsen holds narrow Corsica lead

Andreas Mikkelsen holds a narrow lead over series returnee Giandomenico Basso and World Rally star Dani Sordo at the end of day one of the latest Intercontinental Rally Challenge round in Corsica.

Basso, driving an A-Style-run Ford, was quickest on the first of leg one's three stages, before fastest time on SS2 took championship leader Mikkelsen (Skoda UK) from fourth to first.

He heads for the overnight halt 1.8 seconds ahead of Basso, and 2.8s clear of Sordo, who is the first top-line driver to showcase the S2000 Mini in the IRC.

A stage win on SS3 took Pierre Campana's Munaretto Peugeot up to fourth place, 19.3s off the lead, and just ahead of Mathieu Arzeno (Sainteloc Peugeot), with 2011 title contenders Jan Kopecky (Skoda) and Bryan Bouffier (Delta Peugeot) next up. Kopecky had a minor off-road excursion on SS3, while Bouffier rued excessive understeer.

Further back, Hermann Gassner Jr's Red Bull Skoda has been delayed by a puncture, and Craig Breen's Sainteloc Peugeot has been hampered by driveshaft issues.

Question to Andreas Mikkelsen
Up until the Lisburn stage you were firmly in contention for victory. Then what happened?

AM: “Basically we braked too late for a hairpin and after that it was quite bad for the victory.”

Question to Andreas Mikkelsen
How tough was your battle with Juho – did you expect him to be so strong?

AM: “For sure it was not easy. Juho did a fantastic rally. I was happy with my driving, okay I made a mistake but it was a good fight up until then and congratulations to Juho.”

Question to Andreas Mikkelsen
After your late-stage disappointment in Gran Canaria and now this, how do you plan to hit back?

AM: “We’ve had a good start to the season with a victory and two second places. It would be nice to get a victory on Tarmac and hopefully that will happen in Corsica.”

Question to Ola Fløene
What was the atmosphere like in the car after you lost all that time – was it difficult to keep motivated to get to the finish?

OF: “On the second time through I knew something was not in the right place with Andreas. We gave ourselves a few minutes to relax a little bit. We stopped to get some drinks but then we decided to continue.”

Question to Ola Fløene
You’ve got some knowledge of competing in this region before. What are your impressions of the Circuit of Ireland Rally and this year’s route?

OF: “I have a lot of good memories from being here before when Andreas was 17. I must say I like the stages here and I was really looking forward to this event.”

After SS9: Crazy push puts Mikkelsen back in the fight

Andreas Mikkelsen has cut Juho Hänninen’s lead of the Donnelly Group Circuit of Ireland Rally to 4.2s despite a “big moment” on the ninth stage of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge event.

Mikkelsen repeated the second run of the 25-kilometre Redrock stage in a time of 13m26.2s with Hänninen recording a 13m31.0s in his similar ŠKODA Fabia Super 2000.

“We pushed everything we had,” said Norwegian Mikkelsen. “We had a big moment near the end when I had to save the car five times on a straight. I was in a ditch and bouncing off a hedge. It was absolutely crazy, we need to push.”

Hänninen said: “It was much more dry than in the morning so no drama. I have to keep the pressure on to keep Andreas behind.”

Jan Kopecký is adopting a low-risk strategy to maintain his third place overall in his Fabia. He was third fastest through the stage, 11.5s slower than Mikkelsen.

Craig Breen was fourth quickest in his Saintéloc Peugeot 207 S2000 and is now 21.0s behind ŠKODA Ireland’s Robert Barrable in the battle for fifth position overall. Breen said changes to his rear damper settings in service had improved the handling of his car.

Sepp Wiegand lost several seconds when he braked too late for a junction and charged a fence in his ŠKODA Auto Deutschland Fabia.

“The window is broken, we lost a lot of time,” said the young German driver. “I pushed a bit harder but maybe the tyres were a little cold.”

IRC 2WD Cup leader Marty McCormack suffered an overshoot at a square-right junction. The Northern Irishman is nursing a gearbox problem but still managed to go faster than category rival Tommy Doyle. Garry Jennings continues to top the IRC Production Cup standings in his Ralliart Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX.

Andreas sets 3rd fastest time on super special Titanic + Video

Jan Kopecký has made history by winning the first stage of the Donnelly Group Circuit of Ireland Rally to count as a round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge.

Kopecký completed the 1.8-kilometre Titanic Super Special Stage in Belfast in a time of 2m11.8s at the wheel of his ŠKODA Fabia Super 2000.

Sepp Wiegand impressed with the second fastest time, 0.2s slower than Kopecký, in his ŠKODA Auto Deutschland Fabia.

ŠKODA UK Motorsport’s Andreas Mikkelsen was third fastest, 1.2s behind Kopecký with Craig Breen fourth in his Saintéloc Racing Peugeot 207 S2000, 3.5s down on the Kopecký.

Garry Jennings was the leading IRC Production Cup runner in fifth with Josh Moffett sixth in a Ralliart Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX. Former Intercontinental Rally Challenge champion Juho Hänninen was seventh with Robert Barrable eighth in his ŠKODA Ireland-backed entry.

Sam Moffett took ninth with Alastair Fisher completing the top 10 after a cautious effort in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta S2000.

Robert Consani was the leading IRC 2WD Cup runner in 12^th overall at the wheel of a Renault Mégane RS.

Crews are now heading to the Drummond stage south of the town of Dungannon. The 12.96-kilometre test goes live at 18:30hrs local time.

Mikkelsen sets shakedown pace + Video

Andreas Mikkelsen has gone fastest in shakedown for the Donnelly Group Circuit of Ireland Rally, round three of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge.

Based on unofficial times issued just prior to the 21:30hrs finish, Mikkelsen had completed six runs of the 5.4-kilometre course close to the rally base in Armagh. He was credited with a fastest time of 3m21.9s in his ŠKODA UK Motorsport Fabia Super 2000.

“The first run was dry but after the second run it started to rain,” said the defending IRC champion. “Because of this we were able to try different tyre compounds in different conditions in preparation for the rally. Everything was good and we were quite happy because we could see how much time we would lose running a full wet tyre on a damp road. We also tried a different rear differential set-up.”

Juho Hänninen, IRC champion in 2010, was second quickest based on the unofficial timings in his factory ŠKODA. Craig Breen was the leading Peugeot 207 runner in third overall with Jan Kopecký fourth and Alastair Fisher fifth in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta S2000. French youngster Mathieu Arzeno completed the top six.

Robert Consani was the leading IRC Production Cup and IRC 2WD Cup contender in his Renault Mégane RS.

The Circuit of Ireland Rally gets underway with the Titanic Super Special Stage in Belfast at 17:00hrs local time on Friday.

Kopecky wins Rally Islas Canarias as misfire robs Mikkelsen

Jan Kopecky picked up a last-gasp Rally Islas Canarias win when rival Andreas Mikkelsen's Skoda UK Fabia developed a misfire on the very last stage.

Mikkelsen appeared to have done enough to win his event-long battle with fellow works Skoda driver Kopecky, taking a 3.6-second lead into the final stage despite his Czech sparring partner being fractionally quicker on the deciding afternoon.

But the misfire cost Mikkelsen nearly half a minute, robbing him of what would have been his first victory on asphalt, and halting his streak of Intercontinental Rally Challenge wins. Kopecky was therefore able to repeat his 2010 Canarias victory and claim a win on his first IRC appearance of 2012.

Event promoter and 1991/'94 Canarias winner Luis Monzon secured an impressive third place in his Peugeot 207, comfortably ahead of Sepp Wiegand (Skoda Deutschland).

Mikkelsen fastest in Canarias shakedown + Videos

ŠKODA UK Motorsport’s Andreas Mikkelsen set the fastest time in today’s shakedown for the Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Inglés, as five Fabia S2000s filled the first five places!

Co-driven by Ola Fløene, the reigning Intercontinental Rally Challenge champion completed five runs and recorded a time of 1min 26.9secs over the 2.55km test stage.

Jan Kopecký, runner-up in the IRC for the last three seasons and the winner in Gran Canaria in 2010, was 2nd fastest, setting a best time of 1mins 27.4secs in his ŠKODA Motorsport Fabia.

Sepp Wiegand was 3rd quickest for ŠKODA Auto Deutschland, Alberto Hevia in his ŠKODA Spain-backed Fabia was 4th quickest and Hermann Gassner Jr made it a ŠKODA top five in his Red Bull Team entered car.

IRC Açores day one review: Mikkelsen tops close battle

Season six of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge has got off to a thrilling start with Norway’s Andreas Mikkelsen heading Finn Juho Hänninen by a tight margin of 1.4s following the opening three stages of SATA Rallye Açores today (Thursday).

Local hero Ricardo Moura tops the IRC Production Cup category with Harry Hunt, from the United Kingdom, holding the lead of the IRC 2WD Cup.

Mikkelsen, the reigning IRC champion, made the best possible start to his IRC title defence by winning the day’s first test despite picking up a front-left puncture nearing the end of the run.

Hänninen, who beat Mikkelsen to victory in the Azores last season, went quickest on the second stage to narrow the ŠKODA UK Motorsport driver’s advantage only for the former downhill skier to hit back by beating Hänninen, in his factory Fabia Super 2000, in their head-to-head battle through the Grupo Marques superspecial stage in front of thousands of enthusiastic fans.

“It’s been a good start and, as expected, we’re having a close battle with Juho,” said Mikkelsen. “We used today to find a good pace that we’re comfortable with, and we’ll continue with that pace tomorrow. With the top five running in reverse order, we’ll start fifth on the road tomorrow so we’ll try to make sure that plays to our advantage. Today was a bit of a warm-up; tomorrow’s a long day and that’s when the proper rally starts.”

Hanninen added: “It was okay, a little slippery in some places today and some fog, but I am happy. For sure, it is going to be a big fight between me and Andreas. He was really speeding today.”

Bryan Bouffier is the leading Peugeot driver in third overall, one place ahead of Portugal’s Bruno Magalhães, who is driving a similar 207 S2000 on the event he won in 2010. Frenchman Bouffier suggested he needed to find more speed in order to take the fight to the leading ŠKODA duo, while Magalhães lost precious seconds with a handbrake problem on stage two.

ŠKODA Auto Deutschland’s rising German star Sepp Wiegand is an impressive fifth overall on his IRC debut and his first appearance in the Azores. He is 1.7s ahead of Moura, who reported a throttle problem and a brush with a barrier in the superspecial. But with the top five overall positions reversed for day two, Wiegand now faces the prospect of sweeping the loose-surface gravel for his rivals running behind.

Wiegand’s countryman Hermann Gassner Jr is seventh overnight in his Red Bull-backed Fabia, one place ahead of Dream Team Ukraine’s Oleksandr Saliuk, who is driving an M-Sport Ford Fiesta S2000 on his maiden outing in the IRC.

Rashid Al-Ketbi is a strong ninth for the Skydive Dubai Rally Team with Saliuk’s team-mate Oleksiy Tamrazov completing the top 10, just ahead of Romania’s Marco Tempestini in a Subaru Impreza R4 STI.

Friday’s action consists of 82.85 kilometres of competitive action and gets underway with the first of six stages at 10:20hrs local time.

Andreas Mikkelsen ready for winter warmer + Video

ŠKODA UK Motorsport driver Andreas Mikkelsen is ready for his second rally of the season – this Saturday’s KNA Rally Finnskog – which he’ll contest in an Even Rally team entered ŠKODA Fabia S2000.

Having won the recent Mountain Rally, this will be the reigning Intercontinental Rally Challenge champion’s second winter warm-up event in Norway, as he and co-driver Ola Fløene prepare for Rally Sweden (9-12 February).

Rally Finnskog is based in the village Svullrya, 85 miles (137kms) north-east of Oslo and contains eight stages (four individual speed tests run twice), covering 75 miles (120kms).

Andreas is not the only driver to use the snow rally as a test for Rally Sweden, as World Rally Championship regulars Mikko Hirvonen, Mads Østberg, P-G Andersson and Eyvind Brynildsen make it a fantastic entry.

Mikkelsen Wants Revenge in Azores + Video

Intercontinental Rally Challenge champion Andreas Mikkelsen says he’s desperate to win SATA Rallye Acores next month after coming close to success on the event last season.

The SKODA UK Motorsport star was embroiled in a tight battle for victory with factory SKODA driver Juho Hanninen until he was instructed to hold position in second place in order to secure a one-two finish for the Czech manufacturer.

“I’m really motivated to win this rally,” said Mikkelsen. “Of course it will be a great start to the year and great for SKODA UK if I do but after last year I would really like to win this special event. It’s one of my favourite rallies with a really good atmosphere and amazing stages.”

SATA Rallye Acores forms round one of the 13-event IRC season in 2012. It takes place from 23-25 February on the island of Sao Miguel.
