Mikkelsen Extends IRC lead with 2nd Place on the Rally Islas Canarias

Las Palmas, 17 March, 2012 – ŠKODA UK Motorsport’s Andreas Mikkelsen has extended his lead in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, after finishing 2nd on the Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Inglés.

Co-driven by Ola Fløene, the IRC champion enjoyed an incredibly close battle with Jan Kopecký (ŠKODA Motorsport), as the two factory-prepared Fabia S2000 drivers set the fastest time on all 15 special stages. Despite driving flat out for more than two hours over the fast and twisty asphalt mountain roads high above the host town of Las Palmas, the gap between the leading two drivers was never more than 5.1 seconds – until an engine misfire on the final stage settled the battle in Kopecký’s favour. Andreas lost over 30 seconds on the final test and dropped to 2nd place – although the ŠKODA duo were still over three minutes ahead of the rest of the field.

The 1-2 result sees ŠKODA score maximum points for the second time this year, increasing its lead at the top of the IRC Manufacturers’ table.

Andreas had identified the Canary Island-based event as one of the most difficult IRC rounds to win, yet, running as car number 1 for the first time in his IRC career, he began by setting fastest time on the opening three stages. After the loop of stages had been repeated, his advantage was 5.1 seconds.

Andreas went into the overnight halt 1.2 seconds behind Kopecký, but regained the lead on Leg 2’s opening stage. A further two fastest times re-established a 4.4 second advantage, before Kopecký fought back on SS13 and 14. Kopecký was just 0.1 seconds quicker on the penultimate stage, despite Andreas running with a misfire for the last 3kms. He and Ola attempted to diagnose the fault before entering the final stage, but had to complete all 16.12kms with a misfire, costing them all hopes of victory. At the final service, the ŠKODA UK Motorsport engineers discovered the problem was a broken injector connector.

Andreas: “The whole team did such a fantastic job on this rally, so we are very unlucky to pick up a misfire so close to the finish. To finish second and score eighteen points is of course good, but I really wanted to win this rally and so did the team. I improved my driving on Tarmac a lot last year and also during this event, and whilst I’m really disappointed not to have scored my first IRC win on Tarmac here in Gran Canaria, I promise to come back stronger. Hopefully the Circuit of Ireland will be a good rally for us.”

The next round of the IRC is ŠKODA UK Motorsport’s home event, the Donnelly Group Circuit of Ireland Rally (6-7 April).

Kopecky wins Rally Islas Canarias as misfire robs Mikkelsen

Jan Kopecky picked up a last-gasp Rally Islas Canarias win when rival Andreas Mikkelsen's Skoda UK Fabia developed a misfire on the very last stage.

Mikkelsen appeared to have done enough to win his event-long battle with fellow works Skoda driver Kopecky, taking a 3.6-second lead into the final stage despite his Czech sparring partner being fractionally quicker on the deciding afternoon.

But the misfire cost Mikkelsen nearly half a minute, robbing him of what would have been his first victory on asphalt, and halting his streak of Intercontinental Rally Challenge wins. Kopecky was therefore able to repeat his 2010 Canarias victory and claim a win on his first IRC appearance of 2012.

Event promoter and 1991/'94 Canarias winner Luis Monzon secured an impressive third place in his Peugeot 207, comfortably ahead of Sepp Wiegand (Skoda Deutschland).

Leading finishers:

Pos Driver Team/Car Time/Gap
1. Jan Kopecky Skoda 2h21m46.5s
2. Andreas Mikkelsen Skoda UK + 28.3s
3. Luis Monzon Canarias Peugeot + 3m13.6s
4. Sepp Wiegand Skoda Deutschland + 4m32.0s
5. Jonathan Perez AMP Classic Peugeot + 7m29.3s
6. Joan Vinyes Suzuki Iberica + 9m00.3s
7. Gorka Antxustegi Suzuki Iberica + 9m18.9s

After SS9: Mikkelsen drops back, Kopecky leads + Video

Jan Kopecký has snatched the lead of Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Inglés by winning the 1.5-kilometre Gran Canaria stage, based on the island’s go-kart track.

Mikkelsen was 1.1s in front starting the final stage of the day but elected to drop time in order to avoid running at the head of the field on Saturday’s closing six stages of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge qualifier.

“I want Jan in front of me,” said Mikkelsen, who now trails fellow ŠKODA Fabia driver Kopecký by 1.2s.

Luis Monzón set the second fastest time in his Peugeot 207 with Andreas Mikkelsen third quickest following his conservative run through the stage.

Hermann Gassner Jr clocked the fourth best time in his Red Bull Team Fabia with Sepp Wiegand fifth quickest. Behind Jonathan Perez in a Peugeot, Robert Consani impressed with the seventh best time in his Renault Mégane RS

Crews are now heading back to Las Palmas for the day’s final service and overnight halt. The action resumes with stage 10, Maspalomas, at 10:28hrs local time.

Skoda squad is Ready for 2012!

Skoda will retain Juho Hanninen and Jan Kopecky in its factory team for the 2012 Intercontinental Rally Challenge.

Both have driven for the team since it came into the IRC in 2009, with Hanninen taking the '10 championship and Kopecky finishing second in the standings for all three years.

Skoda will also continue to provide factory-specification equipment for reigning champion Andreas Mikkelsen, who drives under the Skoda UK banner.

Hanninen also delivered the World Rally Championship S2000 title this year, but team boss Michal Hrabanek said the IRC would be the main focus for 2012.

"Skoda's top priority will be to defend the IRC titles we have won in the last two years," he said.

"Three drivers in factory-prepared Fabia Super 2000s are going to fight for points in the manufacturers' category - Jan Kopecky and Juho Hanninen of Skoda Motorsport and Andreas Mikkelsen of Skoda UK Motorsport.

"With future prospects in mind, we want to gain experience in selected events of the European championship."

Andreas Mikkelsen wins Cyprus Rally and IRC title

Source: Autosport

Skoda UK driver Andreas Mikkelsen clinched the 2011 Intercontinental Rally Challenge title with a commanding victory in the double points finale in Cyprus.

Mikkelsen escaped a late scare when he picked up a rear puncture on the opening stage of the final loop - but with title rival Jan Kopecky getting a front puncture on the same rock and losing even more time, Mikkelsen's lead was not in jeopardy.

It could have been a different story had Nasser Al-Attiyah still held second place, but an engine issue on his Autotek Ford prevented the Dakar winner from leaving the midday service, taking any remaining pressure off the leader.

Mikkelsen - who had been a distant seventh in the IRC standings at mid-season - made the most of a scoring system that only counts the seven best scores and offers additional points at the last two rounds to surge into title contention in the latter part of the season, finally taking his first win in Scotland last month.

He battled for victory with fellow championship contender Thierry Neuville through the opening stages in Cyprus, before a puncture delayed the Belgian and then an alternator issue forced him out, ending his title bid.

Mikkelsen was then free to control the rest of the rally to win by 1m40s over long-time championship leader Kopecky's Skoda.

Former Junior World Rally champion Patrik Sandell (Skoda Sweden) took his maiden IRC podium in third, defeating title contender Freddy Loix (BFO Skoda), who never managed to get fully up to speed on his first rally on gravel in almost three years, and was then slowed by engine problems over the final stages, dropping him to fifth behind Karl Kruuda's ME3 Skoda.

Outgoing IRC champion and 2011 S2000 WRC title-winner Juho Hanninen (Skoda) was the other man fighting for the crown this weekend, but he crashed out early on the first full-length stage on Friday morning and was too far behind to feature when he re-entered for Saturday.

Andreas Mikkelsen leads Cyprus Rally after day one

Source: Autosport

Andreas Mikkelsen is now in prime position to claim the Intercontinental Rally Challenge title, having taken the lead in Cyprus as main rival Thierry Neuville retired from leg one.

Neuville (Kronos Peugeot) had claimed the lead when Mikkelsen spun his Skoda UK Fabia on SS3 this morning. Both men knew that a victory would be enough to give them the championship.

But on the next stage Neuville lost two minutes with a puncture, and also reported a battery problem. An apparent alternator issue then caused his Peugeot to stop on the subsequent road stage, ending his title bid.

Mikkelsen won both stages this afternoon and will start day two with a 20.7-second lead over Nasser Al-Attiyah's Barwa Ford.

Current championship leader Jan Kopecky is falling away in third place in his Skoda, and with double points available in Cyprus, that will not be enough to hang on and take the title if Mikkelsen wins.

Freddy Loix, the other man still chasing the title, moved ahead of fellow Skoda driver Patrik Sandell for fourth on SS4 as he got more comfortable on gravel after a long absence, but remains a long way from the leaders.

Cyprus Rally 2011 - After SS1: Mikkelsen flies in Pafos streets

Andreas Mikkelsen has made a sensational start to the Intercontinental Rally Challenge title decider in Cyprus by clocking the fastest time through the LTV Super Special Stage held in the streets of Pafos and shown live on the Cypriot broadcaster.

Mikkelsen, driving a ŠKODA Motorsport Fabia Super 2000, completed the 3.20-kilometre all-asphalt course 3.1s faster than defending IRC champion Juho Hänninen. Title leader Jan Kopecký, who is being co-driven by Pavel Dresler for the first time, was third quickest, 0.2s slower than his factory ŠKODA team-mate.

“It’s a good start, a good stage and hopefully we’ll keep it this way for the whole rally,” said Mikkelsen. “We won’t go flat out everywhere but if I drive fast and consistent I’ll be really happy.”

Hänninen was one of several drivers who used scrubbed gravel tyres to improve the handling of his car. “It was a nice start,” said the Finn. “It was quite good with these tyres because the grip felt good.”

Freddy Loix was fourth fastest in his BFO-ŠKODA Rally Team Fabia with fellow Belgian Thierry Neuville fifth in his Team Peugeot Belgium-Luxembourg entry.

“It was not so bad but I lost time braking too for the first corner,” said Neuville. “On Tarmac with the gravel tyre it is very slippery.”

Toshi Arai impressed with the sixth fastest time in his Subaru Impreza R4 STI.

Last year’s Cyprus Rally winner Nasser Al-Attiyah was the first driver to tackle the stage in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta S2000. He said: “There are a lot of spectators, it’s really interesting and the road was quite slippery. A few times we were very close to the kerbs but we were okay.”

Thousands of fans descended on the stage, which was free of charge to members of the public.

ŠKODA drivers carry IRC title hopes to Cyprus

ŠKODA drivers start this weekend’s Cyprus Rally in the strongest position to add the Intercontinental Rally Challenge Drivers’ title to the Manufacturers’ title already won, when Andreas Mikkelsen (ŠKODA UK Motorsport), Jan Kopecký and Juho Hänninen (ŠKODA Motorsport) and Freddy Loix (BFO ŠKODA Rally Team) head to the final round of the series in a quartet of Fabia S2000s.

Although victory alone in Cyprus might not be enough for Andreas to lift the title, he will arrive on the Mediterranean island on top form. In a steadily-improving season, he and co-driver Ola Fløene have at times led the last five rallies in the Azores, Czech Republic, Hungary, Sanremo and Scotland – finishing on the podium twice before scoring a career-first IRC win last time out on the penultimate rally of the season.

Last weekend, Andreas also became Italian Gravel Trophy Champion on the Rally Conca d’Oro in Sicily.

In an exceptionally busy season, in which Andreas has also contested Rally Finland and been part of the FIA Institute Young Driver Excellence Academy, the Cyprus Rally will be his 17th and final rally this season. It won’t be his final public appearance in a ŠKODA rally car however, as Andreas will drive a Fabia WRC at the Solberg Extreme Motorshow, which takes place in at Telenor Arena near Oslo on Saturday 26 November.

The Cyprus Rally is likely to be one of the most difficult events of the year, as the IRC title decider will be played out on a tough mixed surface event, with a near 50:50 split of rough gravel mountain tracks and smooth asphalt roads. Andreas is the only one of the five IRC title contenders who go to Cyprus having contested the event last year.
